Job Summary
The Gardener & Sustainable Agriculture Specialist is responsible for the cultivation, maintenance, and management of indoor and outdoor green spaces. This role requires knowledge of ornamental plants, fruit and vegetable cultivation, hydroponic systems, and basic livestock care (e.g., chickens). The candidate will support both aesthetic landscaping and functional growing systems that promote sustainability, nutrition, and environmental awareness.
Key Responsibilities
1. Garden & Plant Care
Plan, plant, and maintain indoor and outdoor plants, including flowering plants, shrubs, and trees.
Maintain hydroponic systems, ensuring optimal nutrient and pH balance for plant health.
Manage vegetable, herb, and fruit gardens, including propagation, transplanting, pest control, and harvesting.
Ensure irrigation systems are functional and efficient; perform minor repairs or adjustments when necessary.
Monitor soil health and implement organic composting or fertilizer programs.
2. Sustainability & Education Support
Collaborate with educators and operations teams to support eco-learning programs or school gardens.
Assist in creating small-scale demonstration projects (e.g., composting station, hydroponic setups, chicken coops).
Advise staff and students on plant care, garden maintenance, and sustainable farming practices.
3. Livestock & Home-Steading
Provide basic care for small livestock such as chickens — feeding, cleaning enclosures, and collecting eggs.
Monitor animal welfare and report any health or safety concerns.
Maintain hygienic conditions for livestock and surrounding areas.
4. Maintenance & Reporting
Ensure all gardening tools and equipment are properly maintained and stored.
Keep records of planting schedules, growth progress, and harvest yields.
Report supply needs (fertilizers, seeds, feed, etc.) to the Operations Manager.
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment in all garden areas.
Qualifications & Skills
Essential
Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in gardening, landscaping, or agriculture.
Knowledge of indoor and outdoor plant species, pest management, and soil types.
Understanding of hydroponics, aquaponics, or container farming systems.
Basic understanding of livestock care (especially poultry).
Ability to operate garden machinery (trimmers, irrigation systems, etc.).
Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
Preferred
Certificate or diploma in horticulture, agriculture, or related field.
Experience with organic gardening or permaculture systems.
Familiarity with sustainable farming methods, composting, and water conservation.
Comfort working around students or in an educational environment.
Physical Requirements
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Capable of performing physically demanding tasks.
Willingness to handle soil, fertilizers, and organic materials.
Working Hours
7:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Sunday to Thursday
Occasional weekend or event support may be required.
